A cover letter is a short text sent with your resume that explains why you want the job and why you are a good fit. The resume shows what you have done; the letter shows what you can do for that company.
When to send one
Send one when the posting asks for it, when you apply by email or when you want to explain something the resume does not, such as a career change or a return to work. For jobs abroad it is almost always expected.
A structure in six parts
A good letter fits on one page and follows this order:
- Greeting: use the reader's name when you know it ("Dear Ana Souza"). If you do not, "Dear Hiring Team".
- Opening: the job and how you heard about it, in one or two sentences.
- Why you: two or three experiences or skills that match what the job asks for, with a concrete example.
- Why the company: what draws you to it, showing you did your research.
- Closing: your availability for a conversation and a thank-you.
- Sign-off: "Kind regards", your name and contact details.
Example opening and closing
Dear Hiring Team, I saw the office assistant opening on your website and would like to apply. I have a high school diploma and two years of experience in customer service at my family's shop, where I also handled the till.
I would be glad to talk further and thank you for your time. Kind regards, Maria da Silva.

A generic letter that could go to any company does not help. Mention the company name, the role and something specific about them. Do not repeat your whole resume: pick what matters most for that job.
Tone and length
Be direct and polite, without excessive formality. Three to five short paragraphs. Proofread it as carefully as your resume.
