Profile

Physicist and chemist, a pioneer in the study of radioactivity — a term I helped coin. I discovered polonium and radium and am the first person to win two Nobel Prizes in different sciences: Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911). I directed the Curie Laboratory at the Radium Institute and was the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne. During the First World War, I brought radiology to the wounded with mobile X-ray units. I combine rigorous research, teaching and practical applications of science.
